Madeira

Wood is one of the main materials used in our playgrounds and swings. It is a natural, strong, and durable material, highly valued for its aesthetics and robustness.

It is important to note that each piece of wood is unique. Characteristics such as knots, grain, small cracks, or colour variations are natural and part of its appearance. These elements are not defects — they are typical properties of wood and do not compromise its quality or safety.

Is it normal for wood to crack?

Yes, it is perfectly normal.

Wood reacts naturally to weather conditions:

  • In summer, it tends to dry and contract, and small cracks may appear or widen
  • In winter or humid environments, it can expand, and these cracks may decrease

According to applicable standards, these cracks are acceptable within certain limits and do not compromise the strength or safety of the equipment.

Similarly, there may be some slight natural movement or play in the structure, resulting from the characteristics of the wood. This behaviour is normal, expected, and considered in the design of the equipment.

Does wood need maintenance?

The wood supplied is already treated through an autoclave impregnation process, which protects against:

  • Humidity
  • Rotting
  • Fungi
  • Insects

This treatment is deep (acting on the inside and outside of the wood) and does not significantly alter its natural appearance.

Upon receipt, the wood may still have some moisture — this is normal and does not affect safety. The wood will dry naturally after installation.

Despite this, we recommend some simple care:

  • Periodically check the condition of the wood
  • Tighten screws and fixings, if necessary
  • Inspect for signs of wear over time

If the equipment is not used for long periods (e.g., winter), you can remove and store movable elements such as ropes or seats.

What is autoclave treatment?

Autoclave impregnation treatment is a process that significantly increases the durability of wood, protecting it against:

  • Adverse weather conditions
  • Humidity and rotting
  • Insect attacks

This treatment is safe, non-toxic, and free of harmful substances, ensuring prolonged protection (usually up to 10 years, depending on the manufacturer).

In some cases, a slight greenish colouration or superficial stains may appear after delivery. This is due to the treatment and moisture in the wood and can be easily removed with a cloth. After drying, these marks naturally disappear.
